Easy Food Switches That Will Make a Big Impact on Your Health

Do you want to eat healthier but don’t know where to begin? Here are a few small changes that you can easily make in your grocery shopping routine that will add up to big results in the long term.

Easy Food Switch #1: Replace whatever bread you use with sprouted grain breads

Pro tip: the healthiest bread is usually found in the frozen section. That’s where you’ll find Ezekiel bread, a sprouted whole grain bread that beats regular whole wheat by a long shot. Let’s break down the nutrition of Food for Life Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Whole Grain Bread vs. Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Whole Wheat Bread.

The first option is your typical whole wheat bread, available at most grocery stores. Ezekiel Bread is more of specialty item, available at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, but if you don’t shop there you can always buy it online from Amazon, now that Whole Foods and Amazon are partnered together. Taste wise, the typical whole wheat bread is a little less dense and may be better for picky eaters, but nutritionally it isn’t on par with Ezekiel. Here’s the nutrition breakdown:

Some key takeaways after comparing nutrition/ingredients:

  •       The third ingredient of the regular whole wheat bread is sugar, whereas the Ezekiel bread has 0g of sugar
  •       There are a lot hard to pronounce ingredients in the regular, non-frozen whole wheat bread in order to keep it fresh, which you generally want to stay away from, whereas the Ezekiel bread has only fresh ingredients and will keep longer because it is frozen
  •       The Ezekiel bread has less calories, less fat, less carbs, and less sodium

I personally prefer the texture of ezekiel, the sprouted grains give it a crunchy texture that tastes great toasted with a little butter or mashed avocado. One of my favorite snacks is an Ezekiel bread grilled cheese with tomato and roasted red pepper soup, it's simply delicious and a healthy alternative to having it on regular bread!

  1. Hi Katherine-
I’ve never tried Ezekiel bread before, but now I’m interested in trying it! I usually follow a really low-carb meal plan, so finding healthier switches with natural ingredients when I do eat them is super important! I was surprised how tiny the list of ingredients is on the Ezekiel though, that’s great!
